Legalizing Pot....Sort of.

In the states of Colorado, Washington and Oregon had a recreational legalizing marijuana initiative on the ballot in this past election. In the video of the Rachel Maddow Show, shown on MSNBC, Rachel gives a detailed explanation of the initiatives presented to the people of these states.

The issue with the initiative is, in Colorado and Washington the use of recreational marijuana was passed, resulting from this past election. However, officials are now trying to figure out how this initiative will get an approval from the federal government. The Governor of Colorado, John Hickenlooper reminds the state that "...federal law still says marijuana is an illegal drug so don't break out the Cheetos or Goldfish too quickly."

How can this be? Why was it even possible to have this initiative added to the ballot if it directly conflicts with the laws of the federal government? It is matters such as this that brings on the confusion regarding laws and the "loop holes" in these laws, as to there effectiveness but have no true validity. I believe this should have never been placed on the ballot, as ultimately it could amount to be a complete waste of time.

What are your thoughts?

  1. When I think of the whole legalizing pot issue you it brings me back to the Prohibition Era and the fight for alcohol. As much as the federal government loves to regulate their fear is not charging taxes. Anything that can be made at home privately with homegrown materials can not be taxed and therefor the government losses. Same principle with moonshiners. I think if we are to legalize it , that Colorado did a good job by keeping it a state issue only and not a federal one.
